I'm not living in america, and the political context in my country is not better. Optimism is pretty irrational when authoritarian leaders are in power, i dare you to cite a single way to fight that won't be criminalized in more or less short term.

Politics isn't important. Seriously. I know certain politicians make life difficult, and climate and nature-friendly policies would be a boost, but there is so much good work being done around the world by businesses, entrepreneurs, charities, organisations and more.

I come from a position of believing that we can't 'save the planet'.

But we CAN make a difference still. We can save lives, we can save habitats.

You allude to the negative qualities of humans, especially powerful humans, which prevent us making meaningful progress. Sadly, this is true.

But that doesn't stop us winning smaller battles - many fights can absolutely be won.

I work with many businesses who are effecting real, beneficial change - from powering towns and communities with renewable energy microgrids, to making clothing without plastic, to rewildling vast areas of land... the list goes on and on.

That's where my confidence and focus lies. Not in the politics.

How long will they be able to act as such before being reduced to powerlessness due to criminalization that will inevitably come?

All those things won't be restricted, don't worry, there is no political advantage in stopping them. Certainly in the UK, where I am based, such enterprises are still actively encouraged.
